Our Leadership

Originally from the Tidewater area of VA, Alan moved with his wife Alice and two children, Daniel and Lauren, from Louisville, KY to Bluefield, VA in June, 2009. Since that time, John, the fifth member of the family, was added to their numbers. Prior to beginning his work as the pastor of DVBC on March 3, 2019, Alan has served as the pastor of two other churches. He is preceded by pastor Willie Overton, who served for 53 years. After sensing a call from the Lord in 1993, Alan enrolled in Florida Baptist Theological College (now Baptist College of Florida) in the fall of 1994 and later graduated with a BA in Theology in 1998. He has further earned his Adv. MDiv in Theology (2001) from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and, God only knows why, a PhD in New Testament Theology (2008) from the same school. As the Lord would have it, a funny thing happened on the way to graduation. Although he began with the intentions of being a teacher of the New Testament in a Bible college, God had other intentions, calling him instead to the work of a pastor. As God would also have it, Alan is also employed with the Tazewell County Public Schools as a middle school English teacher. Accordingly, he is committed to teaching his public school students the ins and outs of reading and grammar, but more importantly, he is committed to teaching God’s people the truth of His word for their eternal good and for glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

“We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every person complete in Christ” ~ Colossians 1:28.
